CHAMBER PASSES RESOLUTIONS

Magnolia Area Chamber of Commerce passed three resolutions at their October meeting. All three involve mobility in one form or another and were recommended by the Mobility Committee and the Economic Development Committee.

One resolution addresses the need to consider creation of a loop around the southwestern portion of the city of Magnolia, one that would meet with the Texas Department of Transportation’s proposed FM1488 Relief Route around the northern portion of the city. The request is that Montgomery County Commissioners and the County Judge consider adding this thoroughfare design to the county’s long-range mobility planning.

Board members cite the fact that the southwestern portion of Montgomery County is considered to be the fastest growing portion of the county, one that is one of the fastest growing in the nation. Congestion is already causing traffic problems during peak periods on FM1488, FM1774, and Nichols Sawmill Road. With Magnolia’s second high school opening just north of the city, increased traffic flow west of FM1774 will continue as student enrollment continues to grow.

A second resolution addresses the fact that improvements to FM1774 were listed as a priority project before 9/11 but then were put on hold. Currently contracts are to be let in 2009 with construction to begin in 2010. The Chamber requests that the project again be listed as a priority one to help relieve congestion that is already causing bottlenecks.

The third resolution supports the proposal that the City of Tomball purchase Hooks Airport and keep the area supplied with an airport for small craft. The Magnolia area, which the Chamber supports, is situated between Hooks Airport, and Lone Star Airport (formerly known as Montgomery County Airport), and both airports can be of significant advantage to the Magnolia area as well as the rest of the county and the Tomball area. If Hooks Airport does not remain a flight center, leaders in the area would find great difficulty in ever being able to have another one approved.

The Mobility Committee and the Economic Development Committee is fortunate to have city, county and TxDOT leaders as members, and their input has been valuable in the formulation of the resolutions. Magnolia’s City Council also approved the resolution regarding designation of a corridor for construction of a loop around the city’s southwest side.
